About Us WHO ARE WE?-This Teen Safe Space Network, called the S.P.O.T. Network (Supervised Programs Organized for Teens--thank you to Nick from Media Youth Center for the name), is one of many initiatives in the implementation of the SPF SIG (Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant). This state-funded four-year grant was awarded through the Office of Behavioral Health to Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems and Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI) to prevent/decrease underage drinking and other drug use in the Rose Tree Media Area. NETWORK IS: Rocky Run YMCA Reformation Lutheran Church Media-Upper ProvidenceFree Library Media Youth Center KEN WILLIAMS RECOVERY WHY ARE WE HERE?-By providing youth with a variety of activities and places to go on weekends, after school and in the evening, we are hoping to decrease risk-taking behaviors, as well as increase Developmental Assets. What are Developmental Assets?--The Search Institute in Minneapolis has identified 40 Developmental Assets that have been proven to be protective factors that decrease the likelihood of youth engaging in risk-taking behaviors. The bottom-line is the more Assets youth possess, the better. HCI conducted the 40 Asset Survey in Rose Tree Media School District (7th to 12th graders) and found that 34% of students used alcohol once or more in the last 30 days, and 51% of youth "disagree, strongly disagree, or are not sure" it is against their values to drink alcohol while they are a teenager. You can read more about the Developmental Assets at http://www.search-institute.org The S.P.O.T. Network is growing quickly so be sure to check back often to see where else there are upcoming activities and events!
